Jackson Mississippi is rich in history. It was established in 1821 and named after Andrew Jackson. The location was chosen because of the transportation available on the Pearl River and the Natchez Trace.  Today, Jackson is one of the stops on the Blues Trail and is known for R&B music, gospel, and soul.  Museums and exhibits support the history.

Jackson MS Area Homes BalletFor two weeks in June each year, ballet and dance enthusiasts enjoy watching the United States International Ballet Competition (USIBC).  The International Ballet Competition is an olympic style competition for the most serious dancers from all over the world vying for medals and awards leading to more recognitions and professional dancing careers.  Many Jackson area residents involved in the performing arts participate in making this the huge success it has become.  It takes place in what was the Jackson Municipal Auditorium but renamed in 1975 to Thalia Mara Hall.  Miss Thalia Mara helped establish professional ballet in Mississippi and ultimately was able to get the competition to locate to Jackson.

Each Christmas Season brings the Nutcracker tradition to Jackson. Thalia Mara Hall hosts the annual Nutcracker Ballet presented by Ballet Mississippi. For more than 25 years this performance has been an anticipated event.

Appreciate live performance? You are in luck. New Stage Theatre presents a pleasing variety of plays including a holiday show and plays by the masters, classical contemporary plays, and new “and trending” plays.  Five great shows a year.  New Stage stays involved promoting performing arts all year by enriching the community with Summer camps, classes, workshops, residencies, a youth acting troupe, and much more.

The Mississippi Symphony Orchestra (MSO) is also a fantastic addition to the arts in the Jackson, Mississippi area.  It is the largest orchestra in the state and performs more than 120 concerts statewide.  The MSO also encourages young musicians with its Mississippi Youth Orchestra (in which one of my daughters participated as a young violinist).  Pepsi Pops on the Ross Barnett Reservoir at Old Trace Park in Ridgeland is one of their largest outdoor events and is highly anticipated each May.  The home stage for the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra is also at the famous, Thalia Mara Hall.

Many other events are also cherished by local residents as traditions.  A few of these traditions include Mistletoe Marketplace by the Junior League of Jackson, Bagwell Antique Show, The Home Show, Garden Extravaganza, Jackson Gun Show, Hot Wheels Monster Truck, Mississippi State Fair, the Singing Christmas Tree on the beautiful campus of Belhaven University, and the Mississippi High School Athletic Association Basketball Championship each year at the Coliseum.
